Market solutions and expertise proposed by NAIS in the aeronautical domain are the result of past and ongoing collaborations with universities, research centres and major industries and derive from the participation to national and international projects and programmes.

Engineering activities

NAIS is involved into the SESAR 2020 program as ENAV linked third party, participating to the projects:

  • PJ02 Enhanced Runway Throughput
  • PJ03a Integrated Surface management
  • PJ05 Remote Tower
  • PJ16 Controller Working Position/HMI.

The Company is also involved on the 4-Flight programme (the Italian ATM modernization programme) on behalf of ENAV, with tasks related to Model Driven System Engineering.

ESA Iris Programme aims to design, develop and validate a new satellite communication system for air-to-ground safety communications which fulfils the requirements of the SESAR Programme. In the frame of IRIS-ATARES NAIS worked on:

– Satellite Communication Payload simulator development (phase B1)

– Technological scouting for real-time payload emulation (bridging phase)

– User Terminal Segment (up to 1000 UTs) and Satellite Communication Payload real-time emulator development (phase B2).

  • SENECA (SatEllite Navigation sErvices for Civil Aviation) programme (Telespazio)
Supported by ENAV and ASI,  SENECA aims to prepare Italian Air Traffic Management (ATM) for the widespread use of satellite navigation based on EGNOS.
In the frame of SENECA, NAIS worked on the design and development of the CSSG Front End (CSSG: GNSS Services Experimentation Centre).

Innovative Applications

NAIS has internally developed, over time, a number of innovative solutions for supporting pilots of Personal Aircraft Vehicles and General Aviation aircraft.

Company’s remote-control services solutions are suitable to small (unmanned) aerodromes and cover the basic needs of UTM systems.

This line of internal development addresses the exploitation of satellite navigation and satellite/terrestrial communication technologies for the provision of “low-cost” flight navigation/ information and airfield management services.

NAIS innovative solutions derive from the projects like:

AIRONE  (sAtellite lInk for personal aiRcraft meteO informatioN sErvice)

A NAIS initiative addressing in-flight services for GA in the frame of a recent ASI (the Italian Space Agency) tender. AIRONE focused on the design, development, and demonstration of an innovative meteorological information service targeted to PAVs (Personal Air Vehicle) and based on the use of a SATCOM S-band data-link, particularly suitable for mobile applications. The aim is to improve the pilot flight safety through an increased “weather situation awareness”. AIRONE provides pilots with in-flight tools to assess risk and manage weather encounters over the short-term thanks to the provision of short-term weather forecast on-board, particularly useful to LA (Light Aircraft) and VLA (Very Light Aircraft), in compliance with the “Visual flight Rules”.

RAID  (RPAS ATM Integration Demonstration)

Under CIRA coordination, Italian SMEs such as DeepBlue, NAIS, Nimbus participated to a demonstration project on the integration of RPAS in the non-segregate space managed by ATM / ATC systems. RAID was endorsed by ENAV – the Italian ANSP – and included international partners such as: University of Malta and MATS (Malta Air Traffic Service). RAID is one of the eight European projects funded by the SESAR Joint Undertaking to focus on remotely piloted air system (RPAS) demonstration activities, by the execution of flight trials of RPAS in the unsegregated airspace. In the frame of RAID NAIS was responsible for C2L and GPS security, including the emulation of C2L and GPS navigation security attacks (Jamming & Spoofing) during the demonstration campaign (both RTHL simulations and flight trials).

S2BAS (Space Service Benefits in Aviation System2s)

A project coordinated by Techno Sky (an ENAV company) in the frame of the ARTES20 program managed by ESA with the technical coordination of NAIS and the involvement of IDS, CIRA, Telespazio, e-Geos as partners. S2BAS aims to develop and demonstrate the benefits of an integrated system, based on the use of several satellite services (GNSS, EO, SatCom), mainly targeted to small airports, for the provision of Navigation and Flight Information Services to general aviation pilots in the approach and landing phases of flight.

Company skills cover the development of (i) operational displays based on non-conventional HMIs, (ii) modelling and simulation tools, (iii) flight information systems, (iv) portable flight displays for VFR visual navigation, (v) 1090 ES ADS-B IN/OUT applications for GA/VFR pilots, (vi) weather services, (vii) remote ground services control and management targeted to Personal Air Transportation aerodromes/airfields.

Additional company skills encompass the security assessment of technology enablers such as the C3 (Communication, Command & Control) Link and Satellite Navigation, following the SESAR ATM Security Risk Assessment Methodology (SecRAM)  methodology), and the use of Model Driven methodologies to support the ATM SW engineering life cycle.
