GIC – (G)NSS (I)ndoor (C)overage – co-funded project by ASI (Italian Space Agency) in the 1st SME Frame Program on Materials, Components and Sensors.

Satellite navigation has become nowadays a commodity: since 20 years ago when the GPS constellation became operative, the possibility of knowing your own position through a car navigator or your own smartphone is today given for granted and it is part of our daily life.

However limitations of satellite navigation are well known: the signals coming from the satellites in orbit is not able to penetrate ceilings and walls; in indoor environments any personal navigation device becomes useless (tunnels, shopping centers, garage, buildings…).

The GNSS Indoor Coverage project (GIC) lead by NAIS, is aiming at developing a “light” infrastructure (light in terms of costs and installation complexity) that allows the use in indoor environments of the very same navigation devices used daily in outdoor without requesting any hardware or software upgrade.

With this approach, the GIC infrastructure is a ready-for-market solution, differently from its “competitors”, as showed in the following table.

Numerous solutions for indoor positioning have been devised and implemented and this offering is constantly increasing considering the market opportunities unleashed by the integration of GNSS receivers into smartphones (just consider that people in western countries spend 80-90% of their time in indoor; source:Strategy Analytics).
